The Australian War Memorial has added its first Black Hawk army chopper to its collection.

The Sikorsky S-70 Black Hawk, which was gifted by the defence force, was in service until 2019.

The helicopter carried out aerial reconnaissance, direction of artillery fire and casualty evacuation.

Named “Saracen”, the chopper supported Australian operations in Timor-Leste, deploying for the Australian-led INTERFET.

It also deployed in 2004, 2008 and 2011, and provided humanitarian aid to Operations Pakistan Assist in 2006 and PNG Assist in 2007.

It is unclear when the aircraft will go on display, as the story and history-gathering process of the helicopter has to be completed first.

This includes interviewing the pilots who flew the chopper, as well as ground crew, and consulting official records.

Australian Black Hawks were deployed to Timor-Leste in significant numbers over several peacekeeping operations.

They were introduced into Australian Defence Force service in 1987.
