Mayne: all signs point to an early exit for alleged sexual harasser Robert Doyle

Melbourne Lord Mayor Robert Doyle relied on a network of influential media and PR personalities to secure his mayoralty. Now, it seems, not even they can save him.

Stephen Mayne is a former City of Melbourne councillor who has given evidence to Ian Freckelton QC regarding sexual harassment allegations against Lord Mayor Robert Doyle. Doyle has denied these allegations.

It has been nearly 30 years since Melbourne had a female lord mayor (Winsome McCaughey – 1988-89) but the door might be opening as the future of incumbent Robert Doyle hangs in the balance.

An excellent article on more than just the Doyle situation . The analysis of concentration of power, including media power, has implications for so many issues.
    Excellent work Stephen and Crikey.

‘Loyal to a fault, the Herald Sun didn’t report a word of it today.’

Too busy with Sudanese ‘gangs’ perchance?

Of course not. I also wonder what the legal wheeling & dealings may be going on @ the Herald Sun. May be their legal people have told them to drop the story for a while, this could get very messy & of course extremely expensive for them as well, keeping in mind that Newscrap is not only losing popularity, but bleeding $$$’s as they continue to fight to stay alive/relevant.

On this account Doyle would seem to be a fit for Batman, the loathsome founder of the dismal city.

      Well observed AR. Love this.

This is often the problem with this type of power. It’s so concentrated & so sure of itself that there is always the belief that with the right amount of money & the properly placed legal team that all the dirty or inconvenient little secrets can be squirrelled away by the right amount of money. I personally am pleased to see we have a number of women & also a lawyer at that, that are prepared to stand up & make Doyle accountable for his behaviour & the fact that no amount of $$$’s will make this go away. I do hope Newscrap well and truly get the schellacking they so richly deserve in this reprehensible & truly horrendous public shaming of the Melbourne City Mayor & the office he stands for, also the fact that you highlight how not only important this particular office is, but also how it has been/and can be easily influenced by outside forces.

I think the gig is up for Herald-Sun Editor, Damon Johnston. If it isn’t it should be after splashing the photo of Sullivan on the front page. What the hell was he thinking?
Keep up the good work Stephen.

The print media is almost broke and are trying to win readers with unsubstantiated scandal and unbelievable charges like those against Doyle and several others, it is sad to see crikey going down the same path. Assault in full daylight at the head table or on stage, get real. Husbands not told etc. etc.

This is not a comment, rather it is some questions. 1) Are there any cases of female CEOs, or women in other positions of power, preying on men in their employ? 2) Is it fair to suggest men have uncontrollable sexual urges which they enjoy employing against women? 3) Are the squalid manoeuverings (sic) of predatory males a true indication of sexual desire, or a convenient means of bullying?

Here is a idea, how about report nothing about it until the investigation & report is released to the public, but no, the leftist media wants to get is #metoo right wing conservative scalp with Doyle
