After Treasurer Scott Morrison’s speech on housing today, and his promise of more to come in the budget, it’s difficult to avoid the impression the government is putting together a colossal policy disaster on housing that will inflict serious collateral damage on the super systems — with repercussions that will be felt decades into the future.

    As an aforementioned millennial on a high wage stuck in renting because house price increases keep outstripping my ability to save, its time the government got serious about housing policy and actually dealt with the two largest levers, favourable taxation policy to housing investment and foreign ownership of residential housing. Those two get wound back, and we might have a housing market again that isn’t debased generational theft.
