Another $9m secretly slashed from Australia Council

The government has taken another $9.2 million from the Australia Council, without any notice. The council decided at a board meeting to draw down $10 million from its own reserves.

The Coalition government has slashed the Australia Council’s funding yet again, in a sneaky summer efficiency dividend.

Rumours have swirled about the new funding cut since before Christmas, but yesterday was the first official confirmation of the new cut to the arts agency’s funding.

    How low can they go? Apparently, there is no limit. The intention would seem to be the dismemberment of the Australia Council. As with so much in Australia these days, I wonder what, if anything worthwhile, we stand for.

    “What we stand for?” – well clearly not thrusting or transgressive art which, by definition does NOT emerge from the cloaca of government arts bureaucrats.
