While many of us may not be able to point to Aleppo, Syria, on a map, we at least know that it is a city that has, for years, borne the brunt of the Syrian civil war, leading to high numbers of refugees fleeing the violent conflict between the Syrian government, rebel forces and Islamic State. US presidential candidate Gary Johnson failed to remember this, however, in an interview on MSNBC with journalist Mike Barnicle. Johnson, the Libertarian candidate for president, says he had a mind blank in this exchange with Barnicle:

Barnicle: “What would you do if you were elected about Aleppo?”

Johnson: “About …?”

Barnicle: “Aleppo”

Johnson: “And what is Aleppo?”

Barnicle: “You’re kidding.”

Johnson: “No.”

Johnson later claimed that he thought the reporter was using an acronym he wasn’t familiar with. Right.
