Not one program managed a million or more metro viewers. In other words a bit of a yawn-fest last night as Beauty And The Geek Australia and Big Brother fought it out in the mud at the bottom of the week’s TV ratings trough. Beauty And The Geek Australia episode one managed 919,000 national viewers, which would have been a fairly solid figure for the metro markets. Nationally, barely OK. Episode two had 812,000 national viewers.

Big Brother though could only manage 793,000 national viewers. Weak.  ABC’s Catalyst had 1.033 million national viewers — top figures for what is a niche program. There’s a long list of other ABC programs you’d axe before Catalyst if ratings was the only criteria (which some anti ABC luvvies seem to think it is. Ratings are not the only criteria). As the only science program, Catalyst is doing very well, much better than The Drum for example, or the 5pm News. Landline on Sundays and News Breakfast are two other standouts for the ABC in the way they have added to their audiences and the quality of their content.

At 6pm in Sydney the earth moved. Did you feel it last night? Seven News beat Nine News, 250,000 to 248,000. Unfortunately for Seven the earth stood still in Melbourne and Sydney where Nine News continued on its merry way. In the morning, after a couple of 300,000 plus metro audiences this week, and a string of them last week, Today slipped back and ended with 284,000 (which is close to its most favoured audience number this year). Sunrise continued on its merry way with 365,000 metro watchers.

Nine won the demos, Seven lost the taste test by a half Brazilian wax job (it was a close shave). The ABC did Ten in Total People and the main channels in both metros and regional markets.
