Crikey says: speak out on refugees

Australia flouts international refugee law but no one cares -- so does it matter? An expert explains. CommBanks’ regulation by mateship. Stilgherrian on the Israel Defence Forces’ Twitter hack. The powerbroker who wants to sell the ABC. Pollbludger on Labor’s lengthening lead. Shivering glitterati in Melbourne for Les Mis. Winner takes all in renewables stoush. And Joe Hockey’s musical career -- can he make it?

Australia’s war on refugees reached a new low this week when it was revealed that Australian officials were secretly screening out asylum seekers who were still at sea via videolink, and likely handing them back to the countries from which they fled.

Australia’s conduct on refugees has often pushed the bounds of its international obligations, but refoulement of refugees is an outright breach. The UNHCR has expressed “profound concern” about our handling of these latest boats, carrying Tamil asylum seekers from Sri Lanka.

Just out of idle curiosity, has PNG actually processed any refugees for resettlement? Or has Morrison and whoever is running PNG these days, quietly decided that indefinite detention on Manus Island is a perfectly acceptable solution?

The lack of leaks is appalling. Have some integrity!

SO, vicious bastards on the look-out for a boganboost that they were, they ALP chose not to breach international law (never mind personal/private ethics)despite the kretin kudos such behaviour might have garnered.
No surprise though that this pack of venal chancers happily breach any & all previous standards.
