Crikey’s stories are written by a team of paid in-house staff, and a network of external freelance writers. Most stories in Crikey’s daily email involve a payment to the writer. We pay for pieces that we commission from freelancers, and we pay for most pieces that are sent to us as pitches and that we decide to run. Some pieces by academics, or by writers who produce a piece in connection with their job or role with a particular campaign or think tank, are not paid.
Crikey maintains a network of talented bloggers, who are paid once their blog receives a certain amount of traffic, under a longstanding bloggers’ agreement. Where we commission our bloggers to write a story for the Crikey email, we pay. Crikey commissions some pieces from student journalists, for which we pay. We also offer unpaid two-week internships to university journalism students.
