Adam Smith, referring to the China of three centuries past, stated that an “Old” economy was one in which all the economic (wealth producing) niches were already occupied and that as a result those exclude turned to GAMBLING (yes it is relevant) as the only means to escape being condemned to perpetual poverty.
The real quetion is the extent to which in the midst of all this plenty some Australians may find themselves in an economy which is by Smith’s definition “Old” and in which going down to the
gambling dens is their only chance to escape the poverty cycle.
Could go on about Smith’s view that low wages cause high interest rates and high profits but, given the short attention spans you’re probably all quite bored by now and muttering “but how is this relevant to poker machines”. And suicide.
RSL stands for Retirements Savings Looters. Shaggers Ridge RSL in western Sydney, “The Vegas of the West” and new Abbott stronghold and aspirational battlers recreational activity centre, gets more vicarious centrelink funding than the entire state of Western Australia.
There is another club nearby called mounties. So you can play pokies at mounties; or the other way around. either way, you get shafted.
I have found (as some may remember) that poker machines love a drink. Just pour a schooner down their gullet and they seem to forget all about fleecing people. With luck you might zap the ‘leccy all around the club.
They turn all caring and nice by going on strike in support of the local folks – maybe your grandma, or auntie or daughter.

Try it. You know it’s good for them.
