The pledge made me think of the opening prayer in Parliament – “Almighty God, we humbly beseech Thee to vouchsafe Thy blessing upon this Parliament. Direct and prosper our deliberations to the advancement of Thy glory, and the true welfare of the people of our State and Australia. Amen”, followed by the Lord’s Prayer.
Why not a simple pledge, along the lines of: “We solemnly pledge to the people of Australia to conduct our business with diligence, good will, integrity and dignity, to the greater good of Australia, its people and the wider world”. Any MP’s who wished could add at the end ‘So help me God’.
If they actually held to such a pledge, MP’s would be held in higher esteem than they are now.
STEVE: I like it. Also people might take the trouble to listen to the ‘So help me Goders’, and the fervor with which they say it. Two of the Coalitions more viperous members are committed Catholics, Tony Abbott and Scott Morrison. They would add ‘So help me God’ with biblical passion. You and I both know what lovely Christians they make.
@Venise Alstergren: Abbott and Morrison with their pure venom is a classic example of committed christians that mostly come from the Roman Catholic branch of the entertainment industry.
Scott Morrison earlier today: “… we don’t sign blank cheques to bad governments and we never have.” I don’t see how taking part in the multiparty committee on asylum seekers means signing a blank cheque for anyone. And as far banging on about Terms of Reference – OK, they may be a good idea, but if there was any good will, having or not having terms of reference is something that would be easily resolved.
Mr Morrison and his master are clearly only interested in playing the asylum seeker issue for political advantage. They could not possibly believe that Nauru and TPVs would work now, nor could they believe that they could turn back or tow back boats without unacceptable risks to Navy personnel and asylum seekers. What they do want is one of the following: keep the boats coming until the election; or should the government cave in, take political advantage of that until it is clear that they aren’t working, then blame the government for its failure. And meanwhile hundreds or thousands continue to risk their lives and people smugglers get richer.
Messrs Abbott and Morrison are utterly unfit to be anywhere near the levers of power.
