Reviews have began trickling in for The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn, the first in a trilogy of Steven Spielberg and Peter Jackson’s big screen adaptations of Hergé’s treasured graphic novels. A combination of animation and performance capture technology, the film was directed by Spielberg, with Jackson expected to take on the second installment.

Consensus so far has mostly been positive, with many reviewers comparing the film to Indiana Jones. Here’s a snapshot of what the critics are saying.

Serving up a good ol’ fashioned adventure flick that harkens back to the filmmaker’s action-packed, tongue-in-cheek swashbucklers of the 1980s, Steven Spielberg’s The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn is a visually dazzling adaptation of the legendary – at least outside the US – comic book series.

Empire Magazine:

Action-packed, gorgeous, and faithfully whimsical: Hergé thought Spielberg the only director capable of filming Tintin. He was onto something.

The Sun:

Only the combined forces of director Steven Spielberg and computer-generated 3D animation could create such a spectacle…Harking back to Spielberg’s Indiana Jones epic, we got a crazy chase involving a tank and a motorcycle with sidecar.

Mirror:

Was it worth the wait? All the signs were good. Steven Spielberg directing, Peter ‘Lord Of The Rings’ Jackson doing special effects and an all-star cast…the movie lived up to its promise.

It’s testament to either the genius of Hergé or the limitations of computer graphics – or more probably both – that two dots of ink from a Belgian cartoonist’s pen can express more wit and artistry than £82 million of the best 3D special effects Hollywood can conjure.

The Guardian

while the big set pieces are often exuberantly handled, the human details are sorely wanting. How curious that Hergé achieved more expression with his use of ink-spot eyes and humble line drawings than a bank of computers and an army of animators were able to achieve.
