When reading up on the pilots set to be greenlit for the new US TV season, one of the pilots to be generating the most heat was Smash.

Heavily inspired by the success of Glee, Smash was conceived by Steven Spielberg and developed by Spielberg and then-Showtime President Robert Greenblatt. The show is about the production team responsible for putting together a Broadway musical based on the life of Marilyn Monroe. The cast includes Debra Messing, Katharine McPhee (a former American Idol winner), Anjelica Houston, and Jack Davenport.

It sounds like everything I should hate. And yet, this looks great. There’s always something fun about movies and TV shows that are about ‘putting on a show’ and Smash seems to harness that magic perfectly and run with it in an environment that feels adult and grounded. Also, it’s wonderful to see Anjelica Houston cast on a TV show like this.

So far, only a preview has been released, but it’s already at the top of the pile of pilots that I’m keen to check out. It is, unfortunately, slated to launch as a mid-season offering, meaning it may be some while before we see the series actually on the air.
