The reason that most people believe in AGW points to a national disgrace, in which Crikey has been a major player. And the reason is that the so-called responsible media has refused to give due coverage to the fact that the science behind AGW claim is disputed by a large number of scientists, or to reveal the areas of contention. So McCarthyist is the “climate: around AGW that I can expect a barrage of abuse every time I express sincerely held doubts about it. And yet I am convinced that most of the journalists who make the claims that the issue is no longer a matter of debate have no understanding of the science whatsover. They say we should believe it simply because other people believe it. It says a lot for journalism, which has largely degenerated into mere propaganda, and for the lost talent of clear thinking. Most reprehensible of all is the smear that anyone who does not follow the orthodoxy is part of the extreme right.
History is replete with examples of when the majority have got it wrong. It is pure fascism to suggest that we should agree with authorities, whether they are political, scientific or religious, on the basis that they know better than the great unwashed. Do most people know that the bulk effect of the proposed ETS on world temperatures will be virtually non-existent? This is not just some sort of feel-good experiment, but an ill-considered, ideologically driven policy of tokenism that stands to put people out of work for no tangible benefit to the world.
I have been an environmentalist for 35 years. I plan to spend thousands of dollars putting solar panels on my roof, but it’s not because I want to erase my carbon footprint. I’m a carbon-based life form and proud of it! Governments should be doing what they always should have been doing, spending their money building and supporting sustainable infrastructure for our cities that sustainably minimises the impact of climate on our living environments.
I think we can rest assured that the developing economies of India and China will not be following Australia’s example.
