The Winners: Seven News was tops with 1.258 million, Today Tonight was next with 1.157 million and Cold Case was next with 1.021 million. Temptation at 7pm on Nine, 894,000, Emergency on Nine at 7.30pm, 851,000, The Waiting Room at 8pm on Nine, 907,000. Those two, plus Cold Case gave Nine the night nationally. Law and Order SVU at 9.30pm on Ten, 829,000. How I met Your Mother, 809,000 on Seven at 7pm.
The Losers: Now it’s Summer, so there are no real losers. Forget The Lyrics on Ten at 7.30pm, 779,000 people. Eli Stone on Seven at 8.30pm, 772,000, but better than Ugly Betty, 721,000 on Seven at 7.30pm. Law and Order Criminal Intent on Ten at 8.30pm, 742,000. The Closer on Nine at 9.30pm, 762,000.
News & CA: Seven News again won nationally and in every market but Sydney. Today Tonight lost Sydney to ACA. Seven News (377,000) and Today Tonight (366,000) were the most watched programs in the country last night. The 7pm ABC news averaged 914,000 nationally, but had more viewers in Sydney (274,000), than Seven News (263,000) and Nine News (250,000). The 7.30 Report averaged 788,000 nationally, but it had more viewers in Sydney (244,000) than TT (234,000) and ACA (237,000). Lateline averaged 309,000. Lateline Business, 182,000. Ten News, 750,000, the late News/Sports Tonight, 240,000. SBS News at 6.30pm, 175,000, the 9.30pm edition, 209,000. Sunrise, 367,000, 7am Today, 271,000.
The Stats: Nine won with a share of 28,4% from Seven with 26.3%, Ten with 21.6%, the ABC on 16.8% and SBS on a Rex-inspired 6.9%. Seven won Melbourne, Nine won the rest. Seven leads the week 26.7% to 26.1%.
Glenn Dyer’s comments: A forgettable night of TV — just three programs with a million or more viewers. Cold Case, a failure in normal ratings for Nine, stood out because there was nothing else on the box that was original. Inspector Rex in Rome with 429,000 was another, but why the repeat of Rex at 8.30pm (311,000)? That’s still quite a few members of the German Shepherd Appreciation club. Somehow my cat wasn’t appreciative. And, they were the highlights of the night.
Tonight, Better Homes and Gardens on Seven at 7.30pm, then another silly movie length version of 24. Nine has a nature series and then a movie after tired old Temptation. Ten has Numb3rs and then a Law and Order repeat. Will Ten News be the Network’s most watched program on the night? The ABC has The Thick of It which shows up The Hollowmen for what it was: empty.
For the rest of the weekend, consult your guides, you’ll be disappointed.
