The Winners: Seven News dominated, topping the list with 1.649 million viewers, Today Tonight was next with 1.482 million. Home and Away won 7pm for Seven with 1.350 million and Domestic Blitz averaged 1.324 million at 7.30pm for Nine for the last time this year. Nine News was 5th with 1.240 million and Nine’s repeat of Two and a Half Men at 7pm averaged 1.234 million. A Current Affair was 7th with 1.227 million and The Howard Years on the ABC averaged 1.189 million at 8.30pm, as did Seven’s repeat of City Homicide in the same slot. The 7pm ABC News averaged 1.157 million and Nine’s repeat of CSI averaged 1.121 million at 8.30pm. The verdict episode of Australian Idol perked up to average 1.079 million and The 7.30 Report averaged 1.027 million in 13th spot. Enough Rope averaged 1.014 million and 16th was Ten’s Good News Week with 1.002 million. Seven’s Bones at 9.30pm averaged 954,000 and Top Gear averaged 662,000 on SBS at 7.30pm.

The Losers: Cold Case, 755,000 at 9.30pm for Nine. Supernatural, 676,000 for Ten in the same time slot (all networks other than the ABC are cheering for the departure of Andrew Denton in three weeks. When that happens around 600,000 or so viewers will become available. Enough Rope averaged 1.014 million last night). Viewers or Nine and Seven at 8.30pm when confronted with repeats of City Homicide and CSI. Out of The Blue on Ten at 10.30pm, 372,000 and destroyed the late Ten News audience.

News & CA: Seven News again won nationally and in every market but Today Tonight lost Sydney, but won everywhere else. Sydney was odd. Seven News won clearly, but more than 50,000 viewers deserted Seven during TT. Nine News averaged 282,000, but more than 40,000 viewers went to ACA from 6.30pm to 7pm. The 7pm ABC news with 319,000 still had more viewers than Nine News with 282,000. Ten News averaged 952,000, the late News/Sports Tonight, 200,000 at 11pm. (News gets no help from programmers, just as Nine’s Nightline was belted by poor programming decisions). Lateline averaged 399,000, Lateline Business, 171,000. SBS News at 6.30pm, 201,000 and 139,000 at 9.30pm for the late edition. 7am Sunrise on Seven, 385,000, 7am Today, 287,000. In Brisbane, more people watched Seven News (400,000) than watched Seven News in Sydney, a much bigger market (329,000).

The Stats: Seven won All People 6pm to midnight with a share of 27.3% (25.7%), from Nine with 25.8% (31.0%), the ABC with 20.3% (18.5%), Ten with 19.5% (17.9%) and SBS with 7.1% (6.9%). Ten said it won 16 top 39 and 18 to 49 in the commercial battle with Nine and Seven from 6pm to 10.30pm. Seven won Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth. Nine won Brisbane. Nine still leads the week, 28.2% to 25.3%. In regional areas a win to WIN/NBN with 27.6% from Prime/7Qld with 26.3%, Southern Cross (Ten) with 19.5%, the ABC with 18.2% and SBS with 8.3%.

Glenn Dyer’s comments: Seven snuck a close win last night, a surprise given the use of The Rich List and the repeat of City Homicide. Nine’s Domestic Blitz dominated the 7.30pm slot with 1.324 million, Nine’s repeat of a CSI episode at 8.30pm saw it slip behind the repeat of City Homicide (1.121 million to 1.189 million). But City Homicide tied with the ABC’s first episode of The Howard Years in the same time slot which averaged also 1.189 million. Seeing how a fresh episode of CSI averaged over 1.3 million viewers the week before, Nine gave up around 200,000 viewers and a chance of winning for a second Monday night in a row. Cold Case‘s death can’t be far away after it failed in the 9.30pm slot. That’s another hole for Nine to fill in 2009. Andrew Denton was solid at 9.30pm.

Tonight, it’s Seven: Home and Away, The Zoo, Find My Family, Packed To The Rafters and All Saints. Nine has three repeats of Two and a Half Men, plus The Chopping Block; and a repeat of 20 to 1. Ten has NCIS, plus Rush and three episodes of The Simpsons. The ABC has not much at all. The Howard Years at 8.30pm merely reminded me why Australia voted as they did a year ago this Saturday (or next Monday to be strictly accurate). The Howard Years had its best audience in Sydney, 404,000 and only 349,000 in Melbourne.
