The audience figures for last night’s Logies telecast on the Nine Network said it all about the program: the red carpet special from 7.30pm to around 8.20pm had more viewers than the main broadcast. And even then the audiences for both were the lowest so far: 1.570 million people watched the TV Week Logie Awards Arrivals and 1.502 million watched the actual broadcast itself.

That compares to 1.692 million for the broadcast last year and 1.592 million for the red carpet arrivals, and was well down on the 2006 figures of 2.259 million for the telecast and 2.032 million for the red carpet. That in turn compares to the 2.4 million who watched the combined telecast back in 2001, and the peak for the arrivals of 2.12 million in 2004.

Kath and Kim was the most popular comedy/light entertainment program, but Kath and Kim had the good grace to be shocked and acknowledged that they didn’t expect to win.

Likewise with Kate Ritchie who won the sympathy vote for her second Gold Logie (she won in 2007) for her departure, or rather the departure of her character, Sally Fletcher, from Seven’s Home and Away.

Ritchie’s win and that of Kath and Kim highlighted a flaw in the online voting. If the organisers, TV Week, had organised it so that only one vote could be accepted for each category from only one email address, we may have had a clearer result, and one less clouded by controversy.

TV Week only has to talk to Ninemsn to organise the software upgrade: it is possible and happens in other areas of online voting. It is not foolproof, but could limit the mass voting from Home and Away tragics that obviously pushed Sally home over Silver Logie winner Chris Lilley.

Ritchie’s win though highlights another concern: did she win for last year’s performances (apparently so) or the publicity about her departure, which happened in 2008. That’s another reason why the Gold Logie result is tainted.
