SUBJ: HMAS CERBERUS OHSIR 34/07 – DRESSING GOWN INCIDENT

  5. 5.A. TRAINEE IGNITING FLATULENCE WHEN RESULTANT FLAME TOOK HOLD ON SERVICE ISSUE DRESSING GOWN BEING WORN AT THE TIME. TRAINEE DISCARDED GOWN AND TRIED TO STAMP OUT THE FIRE. SMOKE FROM FIRE SET OFF FIRE ALARM AND CERBERUS FIRE CREW RESPONDED EXTINGUISHING SMOULDERING GOWN ON ARRIVAL. SMOKE IN CABIN THEN VENTILATED WITH PPV FANS. FIRE CAUSED DAMAGE TO BEDDING, CARPET AND SOME CLOTHING ITEMS ON FLOOR.

    5.B. NIL INJURY SUSTAINED.

  6. EXCEPTIONAL VIOLATION – FAILED TO ADHERE TO REGULATIONS.
  7. DISCIP ACTION TO FOLLOW NOTING DAMAGE TO CABIN. WHILST A FOOLHARDY ACT CONCERNS EXIST FOR THE FLAMMABILITY OF THE SERVICE ISSUED DRESSING GOWN. ANECDOTAL EVIDENCE DURING INVESTIGATION SUGGESTS DRESSING GOWNS HAVE EASILY CAUGHT FIRE ON OTHER OCCASIONS WHILST SKYLARKING WITH CIGARETTE LIGHTERS. DETAILS OF INCIDENT DRESSING GOWN ARE:

    B. MANUFACTURER: PENG CHENG INDUSTRIES PTY LTD (MADE IN AUSTRALIA 1998)
    C. CONTENT – 95 PERCENT COTTON, REMAINING 5 PERCENT NYLON.

REMAINING (IN STOCK) NAVY ISSUE DRESSING GOWNS ARE 100 PERCENT COTTON HOWEVER DUE TO SUPPLY DIFFICULTIES 900 ALTERNATELY SUPPLIED GOWNS HAVE BEEN PROCURED FOR CERBERUS BY JLU(VIC) FOR TRAINEE ISSUE. THESE GOWNS ARE 100 PERCENT POLYESTER. INVESTIGATION INTO FLAMMABILITY OF THE DRESSING GOWNS CONTINUES. IT IS WITHIN THE CAPABILITY OF COMMAND TO REDUCE THE RISK TO ALARP.
