The calls came through to 3AW’s Neil Mitchell hot on the heels of the fatal collision.

10:08 AM: Caller Andrew says he is being escorted off [CityLink] at Kings Way. He says there is black smoke pouring from the [Burnley] tunnel, near the red tower to the left.

10:08: Caller Tim says he has just exited the freeway heading into the Burnley Tunnel, and smoke appears to be billowing out of one of the control towers and both ends of the tunnel. He says a firetruck has gone up Bridge Rd, and a MICA ambulance has gone the wrong way to get to the scene. Michell says he is chasing CityLink and the police.

10:10: Caller Debbie says the incident in the Burnley Tunnel is horrifying. She is in Swan St, Richmond, and there is thick, black smoke billowing out of a ventilation station opposite Rod Laver Arena.

10:11: Caller Peter says he is in Cavanagh St, Southbank and cannot believe what he is seeing, as there is smoke pouring out of the Sturt St end of the tunnel and where Vodafone Arena is. He says he has never seen so many emergency services in his life, and he is not sure that it is a car accident.

10:13: Caller Tim says four MICA units and two firetrucks have just gone past him. He suggests it is more than a three car pile up in the tunnel.

10:14: Caller John says he is in Sturt St, South Melb, and he can see smoke coming from the top of the red tower, but it is getting lighter now.

10:15: Caller Brian says he can see the smoke from the Hume Highway, Craigieburn.

10:15: Caller Andrew says both tunnels are now closed, and MICA paramedics have just entered the Domain Tunnel from Kings Way.

10:16: Caller Dean says three ambulances have just gone flying through Werribee towards the city.

10:18: Caller Paul says he saw two civilians running out of the tunnel, and lots of people appear to have been evacuated.

10:21: Caller Marty says one his truck drivers saw the accident happen. He explains a truck could not stop, ran over a couple of cars and caught fire. His driver was evacuated and left his truck in the tunnel.
