The Winners: Seven won Tuesday night with Border Patrol 2.166
million on average (matching the audience for the Australia-Japan game
Monday night), with its partner, Medical Emergency (1.939 million).
Today Tonight (1.633 million), Seven News (1.625 million) and All
Saints
(1.597 million), giving Seven the top 5 programs. Nine News
(1.511 million) was 6th, Seven’s Home and Away was 7th with 1.411
million, Nine’s A Current Affair was next with 1.408 million, Nine’s
Temptation was 9th with 1.301 million and the repeat of CSI was 10th
with 1.272 million. Survivor Panama was 11th with 1.199 million, Big
Brother was
12th with 1.137 million, the All New Simpsons was next with
1.082 million, the CSI New York repeat followed with 1.045 million, ABC
News at 7pm was 15th with 1.027 million, Deal or No Deal was 16th for
Seven with 1.024 million and Ten’s The Wedge was 17th with 1.022
million.

The Losers:Commander in Chief fell off its
perch as Seven ran out of eps with 822,000, half of its starting audience.
Tuesday night, Ten’s The Wedge is falling, falling, falling and will
crash and burn as Ten exhausts its first series: it has already lost a third of
its opening audience. Viewers just can’t understand it and Seven’s
offerings between 7.30pm and 8.30pm of Border Patrol and Medical
Emergency
are more viewer friendly.

News & CA:
Seven News won nationally Monday and Tuesday nights, but needed big
wins in Perth to make sure. Nine was more competitive in Sydney on both
nights. Today Tonight did better than A Current Affair which is still
seeing a loss of viewers from the news. The ABC news did more than a
million viewers both nights. Four Corners had a buy in Monday night and
did 564,000 while Media Watch did 748,000: a turn-on to Andrew
Denton’s Enough Rope which averaged 866,000 in a ‘best of program ‘ for
a holiday Monday night. Ten News at Five averaged 935,000 last night
and just 736,000 coming straight after the Collingwood-Melbourne AFL
game which averaged only 814,000.

The Stats: Seven won
Tuesday night with a share of 31.4% (33.1% a week earlier) to Nine with
25.4% (28.2%), Ten with 19.8% (21.6%), the ABC, 13.6% (13.3%) and SBS
9.9% (3.8%). Monday night saw Nine win with 25.0% (29.0%), to Seven with
24.0% (28.0%), SBS with 19.3% (5.9%), Ten with 19.2% (21.5%) and the
ABC with 12.6% (15.6%). SBS won Perth Monday night with a 27.1% share
from Seven on 24.8%. That was because the game started in prime time at
8.50pm and ended just after 11pm. Tuesday night Seven won all major
markets.

Glenn Dyer’s comments:

The week so far: the
World Cup soccer is of course boosting SBS and Australian sports fans,
but it also looks like it’s helping Seven. After the poor night on
Sunday due to
the Rugby Test hurting Seven in southern States, Seven has pulled even
with Nine (Nine will pull ahead tonight after the Rugby League State of
Origin). Seven has gone from 22.9% on Sunday night to 26.1% last night,
equal with Nine, which has gone from 28.2% down to 26.1%. Ten has
fallen from 22.7% to 29.4%: SBS has jumped from 9.1% to 13.1%. Nine
won Monday night by one percentage point from Seven, 25.0% to 24.0%.The
soccer is going to disrupt the late night viewing patterns of a lot of
people, but the Australia-Brazil game next Monday morning won’t have an
impact on the ratings: it starts at 2am, well after prime time ends.
The sheer size of the audience watching will be interesting though.
The replay of Australia-Japan late Tuesday afternoon was watched by
465,000 people. Nine ran a repeat of CSI again last night and a repeat
of CSI New York (and it ran a repeat of Cold Case on Monday night). The
Tuesday night repeat of CSI simply hands the night to Seven; the repeat
of Cold Case and CSI New York is a way of husbanding scarce new
programs in a week when Nine has the State of Origin. Viewers are
short-changed on both nights, as are advertisers.
