There is a move afoot, covered in a little rural newspaper called Tasmanian Country, which may see the end of Senator Abetz’s squeaky clean image. There is a strong rural backlash against the wholesale buying up of good farmland for the 100% deductible investment in monocultural tree plantations. Abetz says its marginal farmland. But a lot of Tasmanian farmers disagree and want the 100% taxbreak for other crops like, well, turnips, broccoli.

Considerable unrest at Canberra Times as still no word of new editor, despite Rural Press having insisted an announcement would be made by end of April.I am told none other than John B Fairfax has joined the selection panel. Jack Waterford, former editor in chief and now editor at large, has apparently been given veto power which he exercised on the candidacy of Tom Burton, ex-SMH.
