Crikey reporter Sophie Vorrath writes:

If Mark Vaile thought he’d had a rough trot in the press over the Cole
Inquiry and Australia’s wheat trade in Iraq,
his counterpart’s troubles in the old dart must be making him feel a whole lot
better.

Britain’s
Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott has become the latest reluctant star of Britain’s rapacious tabloids since Wednesday’s sensational revelation that the 67-year-old has been having a steamy two-year affair with his 43-year-old secretary, Tracey Temple –
jeopardising his 44-year marriage to wife Pauline, not to mention his
parliamentary career, and shaming Tony Blair’s increasingly embattled Labour
Party.

Prescott was
forced to confirm the salacious rumour on Wednesday after “astonishingly indiscreet
photographs” of him cavorting with Temple
were leaked to the press. Since then, Temple’s
“heartbroken” boyfriend, Barrie, has obligingly filled in any gaps, telling The Mirror that he first learned he had
been cuckolded by the less-than-svelte DPM (Temple’s
affectionate nickname for Prescott)
from his girlfriend’s graphic sleep talking.

“It was the shock of my life. I’d been woken up by
Tracey’s ecstatic remarks about Prescott’s abilities between the sheets”,
said Barrie. “She was giving
graphic details of a sex act. My blood ran cold.”

Indeed. “The standards of 40-something secretaries really
have slipped, haven’t they?” says blogger Nosemonkey on Europhobia. “AND
he didn’t even have the decency to do it in the back of one of his two jags,
but his Whitehall flat. (That’s the
one paid for by the taxpayers, rather than the one he failed to pay Council tax
on…)”.
