From the
television screen to the boardroom, it’s been a long journey for Eddie
McGuire. For some weeks Crikey has been getting tips that Eddie McGuire
is set to take the big leap from football commentator and Millionaire
host to become head of the Nine Network. And now it’s suggested that an
announcement about Eddie’s future could be forthcoming soon.

Yesterday 3AW
in Melbourne ran the rumour that Eddie had been given until last Monday
to decide whether he would pull up stumps from Melbourne and move to
Sydney to becomes Nine’s new CEO. And this morning there were rumours
flying that Eddie had been spotted meeting the “boss” at Nine’s Sydney
headquarters in Willoughby last night.

A close friend of Jamie Packer who already holds huge influence in
Melbourne’s Nine offices, discussion about Eddie’s future gained
considerable impetus with this month’s announcement that Nine has lost
the AFL telecast rights from next year – making his role as an AFL
commentator redundant.

And Eddie has always been careful to leave his options wide open.
“Nothing is indefinite, but at the moment I am absolutely committed to
it (present on-air commitments),” he told The Age early last year after David Gyngell left his position as Nine’s chief executive and McGuire was in The Age dismissing rumours that he would take the helm at a then struggling Nine.

We
put in a call to PBL chief executive John Alexander to find out whether
or not the rumours were true, but haven’t heard back.
