AS John Laws contemplates his future at 2UE after hitting out at
the network’s management, his colleague Mike Carlton has joined the
attack 100 per cent . Carlton said he entirely endorsed Laws’
comments to a Sunday newspaper stating management was not doing enough to
promote the station. In a heavily-leaked e-mail, penned by Carlton to all
network staff – while the breakfast host is on holidays – Carlton said
promotion of the station was confined to a bus stop poster at the front
door. At issue, for both Laws and Carlton are dramatically falling
ratings, which both blame on a lack of station-wide promotion. Sadly and
inexplicably, that (promotional) support has not happened, Carlton’s e-mail
read. Mike Carlton dropped half a percentage point and 10,000 listeners
to rate 8.1 in the last radio survey. Worse still, Lawsie lost 49,000
listeners, falling 2.6 points to rate fifth. While network boss Graham
Mott was said to be annoyed by the Laws/Carlton revolt, he was
unlikely to be reprimanding of the station’s biggest egos. Station
insiders yesterday said the biggest problem for Mott was the network was
essentially being run by the stars. Mott is believed to be addressing the
troops at 9.15am this morning which will then be followed by the latest
ratings results due out shortly after 10am. It is expected 2UE will
recover from its dismal ratings effort of last survey simply because the
network performed so poorly and as one 2UE source put it yesterday, you
can only hope to go up from this point.
