This weekend’s round 13 of the NRL premiership marks the half way point
of the 2005 season… so it’s a good time to have a look at how the clubs are
performing.

In doing so, it’s
useful to look at how the premiership table stood
before round 13 in 2004 and what a revelation that might be for some
readers. My belief, and that of many commentators, that the premiership
has
never been closer, doesn’t quite stand up to scrutiny. It’s more
unpredictable, sure, but in reality the 2005 competition is not that
much
closer than last year’s.

For example, the points spread between first and eighth place in 2005
ranges from 20 points for first place down to 14 points for eighth. A
year ago, it was exactly the same spread!
