With the NRL premiership competition more unpredictable – and
interesting – than ever, why oh why does a totally unwanted distraction
in the former of Wendell Sailor arrive on the scene?

And why do clubs constantly take the “bait” when the likes of Wendell
Sailor and Anthony Mundine – or their managers – float the idea of a
“return” to rugby league?

Ever since Mundine said he would like to play rugby league, and
continue boxing, speculation which club he might join has taken up an
extraordinary amount of media space. Even Phil Gould has given his
return a ringing endorsement – and that will turn many crikey readers
right off!

Mundine is much less of an issue for me than is Wendell Sailor. If NRL
clubs want to raise their profile by talking to Mundine, good luck to
them – and to him. And if he wants to “market” his next fight good luck
to him as well. But the Sailor issue is a very different one, and needs
to be considered as such by every NRL club.

Suggestions that he might return to rugby league are being hosed down today. But where there’s smoke there’s fire.
