“Alby Schultz, once one of John Howard’s fiercest loyalists, has
switched camps inside the Liberal Party, formally declaring that in the
event of a leadership ballot he would vote for Peter Costello,” Glenn Milne wrote yesterday.

Milne had it all. On and on he went, covering everything – except one
minor angle. Nothing but a rumour, a subterranean rumour, but a
fascinating rumour that would go far, far further to explaining
Schultz’s decision than all of Milne’s 1,000 words of flannel.

What does it say? Working the branches in Schultz’s set of Hume is a big, big Howard loyalist. Pru Goward.

CRIKEY: We were first on the Goward yarn when we carried the following on 6 August last year –

At the recent Liberal State Convention in Queanbeyan it
became very obvious to all of us there that Pru (“friend” of the PM and
Mrs Whip) Goward is lining up a role for herself in the biggest game in
town after the eventual resignation of local MP, Alby Schultz, member
for the safe Liberal seat of Hume which is centred around Goulburn but
takes in Yass.

She thinks she’s a lot more popular than she really is in the area and
thinks her profile and support from the PM will assure her
pre-selection against anyone who dares stand against her.
