It is interesting that your Liberal Insider was so totally wrong about the South East Metro AGM last weekend, and has yet to re-emerge with a response.
For the record, Peter Norman won the Chairman’s position, a nice enough old man he will no doubt provide something… although no-one knows what. John Foley ran unchallenged for the junior spot, supported by a Chris Strong ticket rather than Inga Peulich ticket as touted. Foley was keen on the top spot, but he knew he lacked the numbers and so opted for the agitator’s position. The female spot was inconsequential in the power battle. Andrew Clarke, another early candidate for the chair’s slot, opted not to raise his hand on the day.
The bitter brawl will have long term consequences for the Liberals in the region, continued leaks by interested parties (and no, I’m not one with an interest other than the common good of the Liberal Party which I think has been harmed).
Here is my ‘soothsayering’ on the region. Andrea Coote will win the top slot on the preselection ticket in a canter, and she will be backed up by Inga Peulich in second spot. Chris Strong’s invisibility for much of his terms in the upper house are well noted in the regions, and he faces a huge battle to gain a winning slot on the ticket – third appears his best possoble result at this stage.
The only other 100% confimed candidate for the preselection is Steve Hartney who ran below the radar for an average result in Chisholm at the last Federal election. He looks good for fourth among the currenty bunch.
What is more interesting is that Robert Doyle has chosen to get involved in preselections, supporting both Coote and Strong as sitting members of Parliament. What will be the damage to his leadership inside the party when his dabbling is rewarded with losses? They key to politics is the ability to back a winning horse, if you pick losers you will surely become one yourself.
~ A rather more knowledgable Liberal insider – if I might say so myself.
