Petrie

Safe as Houses?

Fairly safe Liberal, 7.4% (post-redistribution – previously 7.9%)

Petrie is another suburban seat, running in a narrow strip in Brisbane’s north from Stafford Heights through Aspley and Bracken Ridge to Redcliffe and Scarborough. Teresa Gambaro has been the local MP since 1996 and the seat has been held by the Liberals for all but brief intervals since its creation in 1949.

Petrie is classic swinging territory. It swung 7.5 per cent to Labor in 1998, almost costing Gambaro her job after just one term, but over the two elections since it has moved back to the Liberals. A 7.4 per cent swing is by no means impossible. Petrie will not be high on Labor’s target list, but its candidate Yvette D'Ath must be counted a chance if Queensland moves Labor’s way.

Declared Candidates

  • Bruce Carnwell, Australian Democrats
  • Yvette D'Ath, Australian Labor Party
  • Teresa Gambaro, Liberal Party
  • Terry Jones, Greens
