Macquarie

Within Mountain Range

Marginal ALP, 0.5% (post-redistribution – previously a Liberal seat by 8.9%)

Macquarie is a semi-urban/provincial seat covering the Blue Mountains from Lapstone in the east to Mt Victoria in the west, together with Lithgow, Bathurst and surrounding areas. Macquarie has been changed radically by redistribution, losing Richmond, Windsor and the semi-rural areas to their north, and gaining Bathurst and Lithgow from Calare. Liberal Kerry Bartlett has been the local MP since 1996, but for most of its history Macquarie has been held by Labor figures, including prime minister Ben Chifley.

Macquarie was Liberal from 1975 to 1980 and again from 1984 to 1993. The new boundaries mean it will be a tightly contested seat. Voting figures suggest Labor has a very slight lead, but the Liberals have the advantage of incumbency. Still, if Labor gets a respectable swing in New South Wales then it should be confident about taking Macquarie. Its candidate is former NSW Attorney General, Bob Debus.
