Isaacs
Legal Defence
Marginal ALP, 1.5%
Isaacs is an outer suburban seat in Melbourne’s southern suburbs that takes in the bayside strip from Mentone and Mordialloc to Chelsea and Carrum, plus Noble Park and Keysborough to the northeast and Carrum Downs and Skye to the south. The sitting Labor MP, Ann Corcoran, was defeated for preselection – instead, high-profile legal eagle Mark Dreyfus will contest the seat for the ALP at the election. His Liberal opponent is Ross Fox.
Isaacs was created in 1949 and first won by Labor in 1974. Since then it has changed hands four times. It will be a difficult seat for Labor to hold. Isaacs is in the sort of territory where the party has been steadily losing ground, and there has been some fishy factional business in the seat. At the last election only boundary changes prevented it from falling into the Liberals’ hands. Dreyfus has a strong reputation in the ALP, but there is an outside chance the Liberals could capture the seat. Labor can’t risk this happening if it wants to form a government.
