Richardson: Not all elections are unpredictable

16/11/2007 12:00:00 AM 0

Another opinion poll, another data point on a nice flat line. The two-party swing is stuck on about 7%, and nothing anyone does seems to be able to shift it, writes Charles Richardson.

Richardson: The battle for the Liberal Party begins

13/11/2007 12:00:00 AM 1

It's much too late in the day for yesterday's Coalition event to really be regarded as a campaign "launch". But it was a launch nonetheless: the launch of the battle for the post-election soul of the Liberal Party, writes Charles Richardson.

Richardson: How internal sources can lead you astray

7/11/2007 12:00:00 AM 0

Richardson: Donkey vote draw goes Labor's way

5/11/2007 12:00:00 AM 0

Richardson: Labor turns its attention to the Senate

29/10/2007 12:00:00 AM 0

Labor has been trying hard to avoid the impression of overconfidence, but news at the weekend suggests that it too now regards the government's fate as a foregone conclusion, writes Charles Richardson.

Richardson: Is there an "It's time" factor?

25/10/2007 12:00:00 AM 0

Coalition supporters, searching for reasons why a government that they think is just the bee's knees should be headed for mammoth defeat, often seize on the "It's time" factor: the idea that length of time in office, independent of other causes, provides a reason for people to vote against a government, writes Charles Richardson.

Richardson: Why Rudd didn't support the GST

22/10/2007 12:00:00 AM 0

John Howard's attacks on Kevin Rudd's record as a backbencher were disingenuous because they ignored the way the Australian party system works, writes Charles Richardson.

Richardson: Punters go for Labor on the bigger picture

19/10/2007 12:00:00 AM 0

At the last federal election, the idea of picking results by looking at the betting markets was still in its infancy. This year, however it's all the rage, writes Charles Richardson.

Budget night: a triumph of rite over truth

9/05/2007 12:00:00 AM
Guy Rundle writes:

So it is that every year, our shaman gather in Canberra. Like priests before a ritual they are sealed off from the profane world in a special retreat (‘the lock-up’) and bonded together in a sacred pact, which sets them off as a distinct group against the rest of their people.
