Burma wrap: Junta still playing politics with lives

Friday, 9 May 2008

Compiled by Thomas Hunter and Jane Nethercote:

As the UN estimates that at least 1.5 million Burmese have been "severely affected" by Cyclone Nargis, most of the affected are still waiting for aid to not only arrive in the country but to arrive where it is needed most.

As said elsewhere: If I were running a big charity group I would be enlisting the Chinese Govt reps to accompany their group/people, and by implication have Beijing lean on Burmese 'Govt' as a PR coup for Beijing in lead up to the Olympics. They must realise that right or wrong the whole world see's Burma as China's sphere of influence. A joint China UN intervention would be impossible for Burma to refuse, surely?

There is no doubt the Burmese Military Government are paranoid in the belief Western Governments will use providing assistance to that country and its people, an excuse to infiltrate the country with spies, assassins and agents. Proof they are more concerned about their own survival than the situation the Burmese population are in. Is all very well for leaders around the world to express shock and horror at the barbaric actions of the generals. Whats required is action. The yanks have the idea, fly in drop the aid and to hell with the generals. What will they do shoot the planes down? The thought of just handing over millions of dollars and food medicine and shelter to the Govt is an open invitation for those corrupt murderes to hord what they want for their own use and to hell with their people. The gutless Burmese Army wouldnt stand and fight if opposed by real fair dinkum soldiers, they prefer to kill and beatup helpless unarmed monks and civilians. Something must be done now.
