I was lucky enough to work as a student nurse at Mutitjulu a few years ago....and it left me in awe of the people. They live in unbelievable poverty and have health problems (like so many indigenous communities) that you would never believe modern australians could still be suffering from. The people taught me so much about family and caring and responisiblity for each other...
And just down the road you dind the multi million dollar tourist park making fortunes off these impoverished peoples heritage.
It is a story of shamefull contrasts...and it seems things have become even worse with the newest government misinterventions. The people of Mutitjulu know themselves what is needed in their community. And is time the politicians started treating them like adults and listening to their concerns instead of trying to inflict innapropriate administration from the outside as if they were wayward children.
I'm hoping to eventually go back to Mutitjulu to work, help and to learn from the people who live there.
It is one of the most powerful and amazing places in Australia and I feel privelidged to have been able to be there.
