Swan

Musical Chair

Marginal ALP, 0.1%

Swan is central Perth suburban seat on the south side of the Swan River, taking in suburbs like South Perth, Como, Manning, Victoria Park, Cloverdale, Kewdale, Cannington and Beckenham. Labor MP Kim Wilkie won the seat in 1998; his Liberal opponent this time is Steve Irons. Swan has existed since Federation and was Country Party territory before 1949, but since then Liberals and the ALP have alternated frequently. The only long-serving member in that time has been the former Labor leader Kim Beazley.

Labor had to defend three very marginal seats in Perth in 2004. Swan was the only one the party managed to cling to. At this election, in addition to trying to win back Hasluck and Stirling, the party will face a renewed challenge holding on to Swan and Cowan. Both will be important to winning government.

Declared Candidates

  • Norman Gay, Citizens Electoral Council
  • Tasman Gilbert, Christian Democrats
  • Steve Irons, Liberal Party
  • Kim Lisson, Greens
