Stirling
The Western Front
Marginal Liberal, 2.0%
Stirling is a Perth suburban seat extending eastward through the city’s middle north from North Beach and Scarborough on the coast through Carine, Innaloo, Balcatta and Tuart Hill to Mirrabooka, Nollamara and Yokine. Michael Keenan won the seat for the Liberal Party in 2004. Stirling was created in 1955 and has usually been marginal; it has changed hands seven times and in 1974 was decided by just twelve votes.
Labor lost Stirling in 2004 on a 3.6 per cent swing, roughly the state-wide average, despite Keenan being a last-minute replacement candidate. He may have more difficulty this time around. His Labor opponent, Peter Tinley, is a former SAS officer who spoke out against the Iraq war. Tinley is guaranteed to have a high profile in the campaign, but Labor’s state woes will work against him in a seat the party needs to win.
