Parramatta
Swings and Roundabouts
Marginal Liberal, 0.9% (post-redistribution – previously Labor by 0.8%)
Parramatta is a suburban seat in central western Sydney. Although it takes in the Parramatta CBD, most of the suburb of Parramatta is now in the seat of Reid. Instead the electorate covers suburbs to the north and west such as Dundas, Telopea, Northmead, Wentworthville, Toongabbie, Seven Hills and Kings Langley. Labor’s Julie Owens has been the MP since 2004.
The seat was held almost continuously by the Liberal Party and its predecessors from 1901 to 1977, when boundary changes delivered it to Labor. Ross Cameron won it back for the Liberals in 1996, only to lose it again at the last election after his sex life became an issue.
The redistribution has made Parramatta a very marginal Liberal seat on paper, but the advantage of incumbency should enable Owens to hang on. Labor needs to hold the line here and go on and win seats elsewhere.
