Turning Back?

Marginal Nationals, 5.5% (post-redistribution – previously 4.2%)

Page is a rural seat on the NSW north coast including Ballina, Alstonville, Lismore, Kyogle, Casino, Evans Head, Yamba, Grafton and Nymboida.

Ian Causley, who has been the Nationals MP since 1996, is retiring and the party has endorsed Chris Gulaptis as his replacement. The Nationals previously held the seat from 1984 to 1990, and it was in Labor hands from 1990 to 1996. This time Page will be a three-way contest, with both Liberals and the ALP bidding to replace the Nationals. The loss of Causley’s personal vote should bring it within range for Labor. The north coast was considered Nationals territory until Labor staged an upset win in 1990 in both Page and the neighbouring seat of Richmond. In this election, Labor will want to hold on to Richmond and win back Page.

Declared Candidates

  • Chris Gulaptis, The Nationals
  • Theo Jongan, Greens
  • Julia Melland, Australian Democrats
  • Janelle Saffin, Australian Labor Party
