Makin

Marginal Liberal, 0.9%
Makin is an outer suburban seat, a wedge-shaped slice of north-eastern Adelaide that starts at Gepps Cross and extends east to Tea Tree Gully and north to Salisbury Heights through suburbs such as Pooraka, Ingle Farm, Para Hills, Modbury, St Agnes, Wynn Vale and Golden Grove. Liberal Trish Draper, the MP since 1996, is retiring at this election. Makin was one of Labor’s targets in 2004, when Draper attracted some adverse publicity for taking her boyfriend on an overseas study trip. She hung on despite a swing to Labor of 2.7 per cent.
Labor has high hopes for the seat this time. The new Liberal candidate, Bob Day, is a veteran of the industrial relations wars, and Labor hopes to make the Government’s controversial WorkChoices legislation a real issue. Salisbury Mayor Tony Zappia is starting as the favourite for Labor.
