Herbert
Defensive Manoeuvres
Fairly safe Liberal, 6.2% (unchanged by redistribution)
Herbert is a semi-urban/provincial electorate that takes in almost the whole Townsville metropolitan area, as well as Palm and Magnetic Islands. Liberal Peter Lindsay has been the member since 1996, but Herbert, which has existed since Federation, it is the sort of seat where the sitting MP can never feel safe.
Lindsay almost lost Herbert after one term when Labor came within 150 votes. In 2004 it swung back to the Liberals by 4.7 per cent, about twice the state average, possibly helped by the strong defence industry presence in the area. It’s not a must-win seat for the ALP, but given its volatility Labor will hope that having a Queenslander as their leader will push the seat their way. Their candidate is local restaurant owner George Colbran.
