Eden-Monaro

The Seat of Power

Marginal Liberal, 3.3% (post-redistribution – previously 2.1%)

Eden-Monaro is a varied semi-urban/provincial seat that includes the south coast of New South Wales, from Moruya through Narooma, Bega and Merimbula to Eden and the Victorian border, and then heads inland to Bombala, Cooma, Braidwood and Queanbeyan, its largest city. Gary Nairn, originally from the Northern Territory and once president of the NT Country Liberal Party, has been the member since 1996.

Eden-Monaro is often described as the bellwether seat on election night, because since 1972 it has changed hands only when government has changed (in 1975, 1983 and 1996). Its record might well continue – the redistribution has put it at exactly the point on the pendulum where Labor would win more seats than the Government. This is a crucial seat for Labor to win, and it has selected a high-profile candidate, Mike Kelly, a former military lawyer who helped to expose the AWB Iraq kickbacks scandal.

Declared Candidates

  • Keith Hughes, Greens
