Deakin

Flirting on the Margins

Marginal Liberal, 5.0%

Deakin is a suburban seat in Melbourne’s central eastern suburbs, extending from Blackburn and Burwood East through Nunawading, Mitcham and Ringwood to Croydon South. Phillip Barresi has been the local MP since 1996. Although frequently a marginal seat, Deakin has only once been held by Labor since its creation in 1936.

Labor regularly comes close in Deakin: 0.7 per cent in 1972, 1.5 per cent in 1987, 1.3 per cent in 1993, and 1.7 per cent in 2001. Only in 1983 did the party actually manage to win it. This time round Labor needs to be able to win seats like Deakin – not necessarily to win government, but certainly if it is to win with more than the slimmest of majorities. Its candidate is unionist Mike Symons.
