Cowan

House Hold?

Marginal ALP, 0.8%

Cowan is a suburban electorate, inland on the northern side of Perth. It extends from established suburbs such as Noranda, Girrawheen and Warwick in the south through to the mortgage belt areas of Ballajura, Landsdale, Kingsley, Woodvale, Pearsall, Wanneroo and Carramar. At the 2001 census, Cowan had the second-highest proportion of dwellings being purchased in the country.

Graham Edwards, the Labor MP since 1998, is retiring at the poll. Apart from the period 1993–98, the seat has been held by Labor since its creation in 1984, but Cowan could be the best prospect for a Liberal gain in this election. Edwards, a wheelchair-bound Vietnam War veteran, is a former state minister and has been a popular member, but he only just held on in 2004 and has been caught up in the sleaze scandals surrounding the disgraced former Labor premier Brian Burke.

It’s not unusual for Western Australia to go against the national trend in elections, and the party’s problems at the state level are causing headaches. The Labor candidate, Liz Prime, will need to work hard to see off Liberal Luke Simpkins.
