Corangamite
Sea Change?
Marginal Liberal, 5.3%
Corangamite is another semi-urban/provincial seat, taking in southern suburbs of Geelong like Belmont, Highton and Grovedale; Bellarine Peninsula towns such as Queenscliff, Portarlington and Ocean Grove; the Surf Coast centres of Torquay, Anglesea and Lorne; and rural and semi-rural areas further west, including Colac, Apollo Bay, Winchelsea, Bannockburn and Smythesdale. Stewart McArthur has held the seat for the Liberals since 1984. It has only ever been held by the ALP for two short periods, including once by future prime minister James Scullin from 1910 to 1913.
Demographic changes, however, are gradually moving Corangamite Labor’s way, as it becomes less rural and more a suburban Geelong seat. In 2004 it barely swung at all, despite a statewide movement against Labor. McArthur, a former Liberal state president, is getting on and turns seventy this year. Labor candidate Darren Cheeseman represents probably his party’s best chance of gaining a seat in Victoria.
