Braddon

Hardwood Flaw

Marginal Liberal, 1.1%

Braddon is a semi-urban/provincial seat in Tasmania’s north-west, dominated by the urban coastal strip extending from Wynyard, Somerset and Burnie through Penguin and Ulverstone to Devonport, Latrobe and Port Sorrell. It also includes the rural hinterland to the south, the remote west coast as far south as Corinna, the north-west around Smithton and Stanley, and King Island. At the time of the 2001 census, Braddon recorded the largest population drop in the preceding five years.

Mark Baker won the seat in 2004 for the Liberals with a 7.1 per cent swing, the second largest in the country. There’s not much doubt that Mark Latham’s plan to save Tasmania’s old growth forests was a significant factor in that. How many of the new Liberal voters Baker will be able to hold on to is difficult to say. Braddon is a seat Labor needs and wants to win back. Its candidate is Sid Sidebottom, who held the seat from 1998 to 2004.

Declared Candidates

  • Mark Baker, Liberal Party
  • Stephen Dick, Citizens Electoral Council
  • Paul O'Halloran, Greens
