Labor's Grassroots Gravy Train

 
Anything you can promise we can promise better should perhaps be the Labor Party's election slogan. In recent months the promises big and small have kept coming and the Labor Gravy train is already an impressive size as this list shows:
 
20 November 2007 - Under Federal Labor’s Plan for Primary Industries, a Rudd Labor Government will introduce a number of new reforms to Australia’s $38 billion agriculture sector, including the reprioritising of $190 million over five years to invest in the development and growth of Australia’s primary industry sector.
 
20 November 2007 - A Rudd Labor Government will invest $20 million in an Innovative Regions Centre in Geelong as part of its $200 million Enterprise Connect network.
 
20 November 2007 - A Rudd Labor Government will provide a $235,000 grant to support the continuation of the Osborne Division of General Practice’s Obesity Program. The Osborne Division’s Obesity Program is a successful community-based intervention program, designed to prevent and reduce obesity.
 
20 November 2007 - A Rudd Labor Government will invest up to $400 million in practical water saving projects to improve water efficiency and make massive water savings at Menindee Lakes on the Darling River in Western New South Wales. Federal Labor’s investment will be used to reduce evaporation and improve water efficiency at Menindee Lakes, secure Broken Hill’s water supply, protect the local environment and heritage and return up to 200 billion litres to the Darling and Murray Rivers.
20 November 2007 - Labor’s National Plan to Tackle the Water Crisis will deliver national leadership and boost Tasmania’s water security with projects worth up to $162.5 million.
 
19 November 2007 - A Rudd Labor Government will provide $3 million to insulate the Fort Street High School from aircraft noise.
 
19 November 2007 - A Rudd Labor Government will provide $1.5 million to fund an innovative Mapping the Connections project in northern Adelaide. This project will be funded under Federal Labor’s $200 million Enterprise Connect initiative.
 
19 November 2007 - A Rudd Labor Government will commit $1.5 million towards securing water for the Australian National Botanical Gardens in Canberra.

18 November 2007 - A Rudd Labor Government will invest $2 million to help manage stormwater, reduce river pollution and improve water quality in Sydney’s Cooks River.
18 November 2007 - Federal Labor’s National Plan to Reduce Violence Against Women and Children will include:
  • $1 million to boost White Ribbon Day education activities in rural and regional communities. White Ribbon Day promotes culture-change around violence against women. Some 300 prominent men have agreed to be White Ribbon Day Ambassadors to advocate and educate for non-violent relationships with women.
  • $500,000 to boost the Australian Institute of Criminology’sNational Homicide Monitoring Program to investigate domestic violence-related homicides to inform future interventions to protect women and children from violence.
  • $200,000 for research into international best practice models for working with perpetrators of violence – to make them confront their violence and its impact on their partners and children.
  • $150 million to construct 600 additional houses to accommodate people who are homeless including women and children escaping domestic violence.
16 November 2007 - Federal Labor today unveiled a plan to fast­track the completion of radiotherapy services at Lismore Base Hospital. A Rudd Labor Government will invest a total of $15 million in radiotherapy services at Lismore Base Hospital.
 
15 November 2007 - A Rudd Labor government, in partnership with the Western Australian government will invest $80 million to deliver a $100 million upgrade of roads vital to the Pilbara mining, oil and gas, and chemical export hub of Dampier and the Burrup Peninsula.
 
15 November 2007 - A Rudd Labor government will partner with the private sector and State government to deliver a $180 million upgrade to road and rail networks in Esperance and improve access to the port for crucial export industries.
15 November 2007 - Federal Labor Government will invest $5.3 million in a package of initiatives for the Central West Queensland Growth Corridor.
 
14 November 2007 - To boost Australia’s international competitiveness, a Rudd Labor Government will significantly improve and expand Australia’s Commonwealth Scholarship program by investing $202 million in the Scholarships for a Competitive Future policy.
 
14 November 2007 - A Rudd Labor Government will invest the following amounts in the Clean Energy Plan:
  • $500 million Renewable Energy Fund - to develop, commercialise and deploy renewable energy in Australia.
  • $240 million Clean Business Fund – to help business and industry deliver energy and water efficiency projects, with a focus on productivity and innovation.
  • $150 million Energy Innovation Fund – to keep our world leading scientists and researchers in Australia, rather than losing them overseas.
14 November 2007 - A Rudd Labor Government will invest $540 million in workforce skills including funding an additional 450,000 skilled training places over the next four years - 200,000 more than the Howard Government; ensuring that 90 per cent of these places lead to a higher qualification than the Howard Government’s proposed new training places; and placing industry demand at the heart of the skills training system – so that training providers equip Australians with the skills that industry needs.
 
14 November 2007 - A Rudd Labor Government will invest $1 billion over four years to turn every secondary school in Australia into a digital school. Federal Labor’s National Secondary School Computer Fund will allow every Australian student in years 9-12 to have access to their own school computer.
 
13 November 2007 - Shadow Minister for Veterans' Affairs, Alan Griffin,To further empower the ex-service community, Labor will also provide an additional $8 million over four years for ex service organisations to provide essential services for members through the Building Excellence in Support and Training (BEST) and the Training and Information (TIP) programs. To improve the support provided to families of veterans, a Rudd Labor Government will extend the Income Support Supplement to War Widows under 58 without dependents at a cost of $7.7 million over the forward estimates. 
 
12 November 2007 - A Rudd Labor Government will invest $100 million for a five-year Community Coast Care Program – as part of its Caring for our Coasts Plan – to help local communities protect the Australian coastline and prepare for the impact of climate change. (Announced by Peter Garrett) 
 
12 November 2007 - A Rudd Labor Government will fix crumbling transport infrastructure for New South Wales grain growers and work with the New South Wales Government to finish the Hume Highway upgrade by 2012. Federal Labor will invest $3 million to set up a high-powered taskforce of growers, handlers, the National Farmers Federation, the Australian Rail Track Corporation and the New South Wales Government to get grain exports back on track.
 
12 November 2007 - A Rudd Labor Government will invest $1.5 million in the Cairns Multi-Sport Stadium. The project will be established in Edmonton - a major growth centre for the Cairns region which is expected to house 60,000 people by 2036. The stadium will provide much needed sport and recreation facilities in the fast growing southern Cairns Growth corridor.
 
11 November 2007 - A Rudd Labor Government will contribute $6 million to make Perth suburbs safer. This package will include $1.5 million for the City of Gosnells, City of Swan and the Shire of Kalamunda to install CCTV also $1 million to the City of Wanneroo to introduce CCTV; $500,000 to establish a new facility to assist local police in combating crime in the City of Swan; $1.4 million to assist in installing CCTV with the City of Belmont and finally $1.6 million to work with the city of Stirling to provide additional mobile security patrols.
 
11 November 2007 - A Rudd Labor Government will invest up to $510 million over three years to assist over one million Australian teenagers between the ages of 12 and 17 with dental costs. Under Federal Labor’s Teen Dental Plan families will be able to claim up to $150 towards the cost of an annual dental preventative check for each of their teenage children through Medicare.
 
10 November 2007 - Labor’s Shadow Minister for Immigration, Tony Burke and Labor Candidate for Stirling, Peter Tinley today announced a $1 million contribution towards building a Multicultural Centre in Mirrabooka. The centre will be built on land allocated in the redevelopment of Mirrabooka and the City of Stirling will auspice the proposed centre.
 
10 November 2007 – Peter Garrett announced an investment of $17 million over four years in a new Creative Industries Innovation Centre – helping creative Aussie companies to leave an even bigger stamp on the Australian and overseas economies; and investment of an additional $7.6 million over four years for the National Arts and Crafts Industry Support program to support Aboriginal Art Centres around the country.
 
9 November 2007 - Federal Labor announced a package of initiatives worth more than $10 million for the Geelong-Surf Coast Growth Corridor. The specific projects which Labor will invest in include:
  • $1.5 million for the DW Hope Community Centre, North Geelong
  • $640,000 for the Beechy Centre, Colac
  • $150,000 for the Colac Botanic Gardens
  • $3 million for the Leisurelink Community Hub, Armstrong Creek
  • $4 million for the Torquay Multi-Purpose Sporting Precinct
  • $450,000 for the Spring Creek Community House
  • $400,000 for the Torquay Senior Citizen’s Centre Upgrade
8 November 2007 - A Rudd Labor Government will invest $5 million to help the City of Casey develop a ‘state-of-the-art’ water smart pool in Cranbourne.
 
6 November 2007 - A Labor Government would spend over $1.5 billion dollars on road infrastructure in northern NSW including an allocation of $446 million to build the Ballina Bypass project; $335 million duplication from Tintenbar to Ewingsdale, linking the Ballina Bypass from Sandy Flat Road to the existing dual carriageway at Ewingsdale; $90 million to build the Alstonville Bypass; $460 million to get the duplication of the Sapphire to Woolgoolga built; and $210 million to complete the long-awaited Sextons Hill upgrade at Banora Point in the Tweed.
 
5 November 2007 - A Rudd Labor Government will invest $150 million over five years with the aim of halving the number of homeless people turned away from homeless shelters. A Place to Call Home is Federal Labor’s five year plan to establish up to 600 new houses and units across the country for families and individuals who are homeless.
 
4 November 2007 - A Rudd Labor Government will help aspiring first home buyers save a larger deposit by establishing new, low tax, First Home Saver Accounts. Over the first three years Federal Labor’s First Home Saver Accounts will help around half a million first home buyers save a bigger deposit by establishing superannuation-style low tax savings accounts. Federal Labor’s First Home Saver Accounts will help boost national savings, with the accounts anticipated to hold around $3.5 billion in savings after three years.
 
4 November 2007 - A Rudd Labor Government will invest $6.6 million to fund 50 per cent of the cost of the Gascoyne Irrigation Pipeline Project. The Western Australian Government and Gascoyne Water will contribute the other 50 per cent to fully fund a high pressure irrigation water delivery system across the Carnarvon Irrigation Area.
 
1 November 2007 - A Rudd Labor government will invest nearly a third of a billion dollars in major road and rail projects in Tasmania to end logjam by getting trucks out of towns, creating a transport ‘super-hub’ at Brighton and linking key land, air and sea infrastructure. Shadow Minister for Transport, Roads and Tourism, Martin Ferguson, said the $303 million package was about Labor’s core business – jobs.
 
1 November 2007 - A Rudd Labor Government will invest $50 million to establish A National Reciprocal Public Transport Entitlement to ensure State Government Senior’s Card holders can travel at concessional rates anywhere in Australia. This is one part of Federal Labor’s Making Ends Meet plan announced today for older Australians, people with disabilities and carers.
 
31 October 2007 - A Rudd Labor Government will invest $23 million to improve health services in Grafton. This includes $5 million for a new GP Super Clinic – to take pressure off Grafton Base Hospital and $18 million for capital upgrades at Grafton Base Hospital.

31 October 2007 - A Rudd Labor Government will introduce a new national public hospital report card system – covering elective surgery waiting times – as part of its $600 million investment to tackle elective surgery waiting lists. Federal Labor will invest an additional $600 million – over four years – to dramatically reduce waiting times for elective surgery such as hip and knee replacements in Australia’s public hospitals.
 
31 October 2007 - A Rudd Labor Government will invest $23 million to improve health services in Grafton. The funding includes $5 million for a new GP Super Clinic – to take pressure off Grafton Base Hospital - and $18 million for capital upgrades at Grafton Base Hospital. The $18 million for the redevelopment of Grafton Base Hospital is to help upgrade the emergency department and complete three new operating theatres. Federal Labor’s investment of $5 million in a new GP Super Clinic in Grafton will deliver improved services to the residents of this community while also taking pressure off the Grafton Base Hospital.
 
30 October 2007 - A Rudd Labor government, in partnership with the Western Australian government, will invest $160 million to deliver a $200 million upgrade of roads vital to the Pilbara mining and pastoral industries’ export hub of Port Hedland. Federal Labor’s plan will straighten  the Great Northern Highway and disentangle it from the railway, eliminating three right angle bends and three rail crossings to access the port.
 
29 October 2007 - A Rudd Labor government will put $180 million into the Great Eastern Highway upgrade from Kooyong Road to the Tonkin Highway, a project that will cost $225 million, with the Western Australian government funding the balance. The Great Eastern Highway project will involve a 6.5km upgrade of the road to six lanes between the Graham Farmer Freeway and Perth airport. A Rudd Labor government will also provide $48 million towards the upgrade of the Great Eastern Highway and Roe Highway intersection, which is severely congested on all legs for extended peak periods throughout the day.
 
29 October 2007 - A Rudd Labor Govern ment will implement a $200 million Great Barrier Reef Rescue Plan to help secure the Reef from climate change and declining water quality. The Great Barrier Reef Rescue Plan will:
  • Invest $146 million in a new Water Quality Grants Scheme;
  • Commit $12 million to significantly extend the Reef Partnerships Program;
  • Provide $10 million in new grants for Water Quality Research & Development;
  • Significantly strengthen the Great Barrier Reef Water Quality Monitoring and Reporting Program by investing an extra $22 million;
  • Establish a new $10 million Land and Sea Country Indigenous Partnerships Program; and
  • Publish an annual “Great Barrier Reef Water Quality Report Card”.
28 October 2007 - A Rudd Labor Government will implement a $1 Billion National Urban Water and Desalination Plan to help secure the water supplies of Australia’s major cities. The initiative will drive major desalination projects across Australia. It will also support water recycling and major stormwater capturing projects nationwide. Federal Labor’s The Plan will will fund a 10% Water Tax Credit and grants for approved desalination, water recycling, and major storm water capture projects developed by the private sector, local governments, and State and Territory Governments.

26 October 2007 - A Rudd Labor Government will provide a rebate of up to $500 to help landlords install energy-efficient insulation in 300,000 Australian rental homes in a practical measure to help fight climate change. Federal Labor’s $150 million Low Emission Plan for Renters will reduce the power bills and greenhouse gas emissions of 300,000 rental properties.
 
26 October 2007 - A Rudd Labor Government will invest up to $489 million in a National Solar Schools Plan to make all of Australia’s 9,612 private and public schools “Solar Schools” within eight years. Federal Labor’s National Solar Schools Plan will allow all Australian schools to apply for: grants of up to $20,000 to install 2 kilowatt solar panels to provide average greenhouse gas savings of up to 2.8 tonnes per year; and grants of up to $30,000 to install efficiency improvements so schools can invest in energy and water measures including rainwater tanks, solar hot water systems, and lighting upgrades. Federal Labor’s National Solar Schools Plan will invest up to $50,000 in every school across Australia.

25 October 2007 - A Rudd Labor Government will launch a significantly revamped and expanded Volunteer Grants Program and to help community volunteers meet the soaring cost of petrol. Federal Labor’s expanded three-year $69 million program will make it easier for volunteer community organisations to claim the financial support they deserve. Federal Labor’s expanded and improved Volunteer Grants Program will make almost 27,000 voluntary non-profit community organisations will be eligible to receive financial assistance, and will allow community organisations to apply for grants of up to $3,000.

24 October 2007 - A Rudd Labor Government will commit $1.02 billion to upgrade Melbourne’s motorways and freeways – removing two major Melbourne bottlenecks. A Rudd Labor government will commit: $900 million to start the $2.25 billion widening and intelligent transport upgrade of the Western Ring Road; and, $120 million towards the $240 million strengthening of the West Gate Bridge to improve its carrying capacity. 
 
23 October 2007 - A Rudd Labor government will work in partnership with the South Australian government to jointly fund a fix for one of Adelaide's worst traffic bottlenecks, Shadow Minister for Transport, Roads and Tourism, Martin Ferguson said today. The $7 million project will widen and upgrade the existing intersection, including installing traffic lights and upgrading Main South Road at the Seaford Road intersection.

A Rudd Labor Government will provide a new 50% Education Tax Refund to help families of around 2.3 million school-age children meet the costs of education.

18 October 2007 - A Rudd Labor Government will invest $600 million to dramatically slash waiting lists for elective surgery in Australia's public hospitals. This four year plan, beginning in 2007-08, is funded through a $400 million investment from Federal Labor's Tax Plan for Australia's Future and $200 million from Federal Labor's $2 billion National Health and Hospitals Reform Plan.

13 October 2007 - A Rudd Labor Government will invest up to $50 million in the establishment of a Comprehensive Cancer Centre in Sydney – to treat patients and conduct research into the disease at a world class facility... Today's initiative is another part of Federal Labor's National Cancer Plan

12 October 2007 - Federal Labor today expanded its national effort on cancer to include support for the Olivia Newton-John Cancer Centre and setting up the first two dedicated prostate cancer research centres. Federal Labor will provide $30 million for two new cancer initiatives: the Olivia Newton-John Cancer Centre at the Austin Hospital in Melbourne; and the establishment of two dedicated Prostate Cancer Research Centres – the first in Australia.

11 October 2007 - Under a national cancer initiative, a Rudd Labor Government will invest $25 million over three years to screen all 50 year olds for bowel cancer – the second biggest cancer killer after lung cancer.

10 October 2007 - A Rudd Labor Government will invest up to $15 million in the construction of a new Children's Cancer Centre at the Women's and Children's Hospital (WCH), Adelaide – as part of Federal Labor's national cancer plan.

1 October 2007 - A Rudd Labor Government will invest up to $5 million to establish a GP Super Clinic co-located with the Redcliffe Hospital. This will help take pressure off the Redcliffe Hospital.

28 September 2007 - A Rudd Labor Government will invest in our local sporting champions with a Local Champions Grant Program to provide financial assistance for our junior sportsmen and women. … The Local Champions Grant Program will be administered by the Australian Sports Commission in consultation with local government, with $1.6 million per annum allocated to the program starting in 2008-09.

26 September 2007 - A Rudd Labor Government will invest $7.5 million in a GP Super Clinic in Brisbane's Southside to provide better health services to the Southside community.

3 September 2007 -- Federal Labor’s $300 million Kessels Road underpass will be a project in partnership with the Queensland Government and is part of Federal Labor’s Major Cities infrastructure program.

31 August 2007 -- A Federal Labor government will work in partnership with the NSW government to get moving now on the $140 million widening of the F5 between Ingleburn and Campbelltown in Sydney’s south-west.

23 August 2007 -- Federal Labor will establish a $2 billion National Health Reform Plan over four years to improve Australia’s health system and ensure better health services for patients in hospitals.

24 June 2007 -- A Rudd Labor Government will increase the overall size of the Australian Federal Police by 500 sworn officers over five years – as part of a five-point federal policing plan worth $200 million.
