Yes he’s very pissed off about this article but Tropfest seems to have created a DIY myth about itself that just isn’t true. I also agree with the dude from St Kilda Fest who said that it’s not a film festival so much as a film event. Films are made specifically for it. I’ve never entered cos I just don’t make the type of films Tropfest are after.

I enjoyed the read, but you were definitely pushing the line that was set out in the intro.

Polson may have been annoyed at this: “Two decades of rubbing shoulders with Hollywood’s elite seems to have boosted the organiser’s profile.” It sounds like you are saying he only directed those films because of Tropfest, rather than his talent. I’d have the shits, too.

I don’t know if things have changed in recent years, I haven’t really been paying attention, but I was a finalist in 2005 with my brother and a friend, on the back of a film the three of us made for under $75. Although Tropfest did have exclusive distribution rights (they don’t own the films), they were happy for us to enter the film into other festivals, which we did, garnering a few awards along the way.
