Funny how all these abstract ‘wars on whatever’ started relatively recently.

Back in the 70’s a large number of real terrorists were regularly attacking the olympics, London pubs, airplanes, airports even ships. No crazy increases in security were applied and the threat basically dissipated as the perpetrators were arrested.

We have seen the impacts in Britain when the Murdoch’s infringed their responsibility to the community and thumbed their fingers at bussines and public ethics.
Large sections of industry along with the Digitised and Aborcide sections of the media are gathering enormous amounts of data on everything and everyone.

Bernard, I have enjoyed your informative articles on cyber security and your efforts to expose the overview position of all of governments and its impact on our privacy.
But i would like to add to the discourse with the observation that the Media are major data storers of information. Their very Mast-Heads are valued by an implied assesment of the value of their library and stored intellectual value.
Perhaps an expose of the MSM and Publishing companies treatment and protections of their own files and libraries would be in order.
The current secrecy and privacy statement and disclaimers are really simplistic legalese to protect the provider of the statement rather public.

Thanks jesse m, but I think they will find their way around that one (vpn).
Even before the internet, they all had copious files on anyone that displayed a contrary attitude to their perceived norm.
In fact I was reliably informed by one of the archivist with a badge, that they measured their interest in the file’s focus by the height of the file in inches.
And that was before micro fish and microfilm.

Be aware and forewarned I say and then got on with it. If the net facilitates the communication of most of the population on the earth then they will have to committ enormous amounts of IT power and resources to keep all our comments in their correct files.
Flood them with the facts of the populaces’ perceptions of their actions and inactions.

The PM and the AG are people who take advice from their public servants, who one would hope have no interest in giving false advice. Our MPs have very little knowledge about how the internet works so lets hope they are getting real advice.

The last sentence really sums it up: it’s a war against the paradigm shift. As the internet democratises information and throws open the possibilities of individuals and groups to communicate, governments are working hard to tamp it down, constrict it, and monitor everyone down to the last keystroke.

As if the war on terrorism wasn’t abstract enough, now we have to have a perpetual war against ‘cyber terrorism’, something actually chimerical and unreal.

Be alert AND alarmed, the government is here to watch you.
