This was my first Crikey read and it is a great refreshment. I think I will stay on board if this is the level of article that I can expect. Fantastic!

It's been an interesting year and your analysis and perspective give me hope about the survival of political journalism beyond the demise of the mainstream media. Looking forward to your thoughts in 2013.

2012, when the world of the old media came to an end.
And the echoes of whimpering will bounce around for a while. But don't be deceived, the Old Media are dead.
There may be a few diseased remnants, former employees, who linger for a while, but they carry within them the poisoned seeds of their own destruction. Good riddance!
The internets direct source of knowledge will "educate" democracy with no need for "mediation" by the palace eunuchs of the press revealed in 2012 to be just politicians in hiding.
To paraphrase Thomas Carlyle, who coined the term "The Fourth Estate" let a million editors bloom, unmediated by mediocracry mocked up as as excellence.
We do not need the muse Clio to write the doings of the gods, such gods as there may be can write for themselves on the internet, while the worms who may wish to worship them can continue to crawl in the dirt.
Oh, well done Bernard!

A few days into my first employment in 1980, a much older colleague told me that knowledge is not just what you know, but also knowing where and how to access the information that you need.... So long as you can determine accuracy in the information that you are accessing, I guess that the internet has made that concept much more poignant (and accessable) to the general population.

Presumably 30 years ago pollies held media conferences to meet the deadlines of the morning or afternoon papers; 20 years ago to meet the deadline of the morning papers; and from 15 years ago to meet the deadline of evening tv news. We'll know that online media have become more important than the traditional media when pollies time media conferences to suit the online media, ie, at any time of the day (or nite).

my say, I go to press conferences when it doesn't conflict with deadlines, which is a big hindrance. the Press Club has an "identify yourself" requirement but those questions are doled out. media events are usually free-for-alls.

Nothing more demonstrates the irrelevancy of the Canberra Press Gallery than how they mis-read Julia Gillard's Misogyny speech.
That's amplified by their failure to investigate Slippergate and the attempts to spin it any other way than a disaster for Tony Abbott.

There could be no more fascinating Good Story than Slippergate and where the MSM fails, the net will provide.

Print newspapers are determined to dictate what their readers shall have despite those readers fleeing in the 1000s.

Even the rise of the parasitical parts of the net : Google, Facebook, Twitter etc that are sucking up all advertising revenue , basing themselves in tax havens and allowing the ordinary punter to subsidize them while retuning little to the community, were actively promoted by the MSM, unable to perceive that simultaneously they were shooting themselves in the foot and promoting without question for investors, the Mother of All Rip-Offs.

Today's print journalists will be tomorrow taxi drivers.

What are computer dependents and addicts going to do when the electricity goes off, for good? They don't even know how to write or spell. Brownouts are common in many country's around the world and we are already seeing groups in the Australian community who have been forced to disconnect their electricity because they can't afford it.

There's a great bit in "Amusing Ourselves to Death" where the writer relates how Lincoln when campaigning for president suggests that everyone goes home and has dinner and comes back because they've just listened to a two hour speech from his opportunity and he doesn't want them to be hungry as he intends to speak for that amount of time also. Of course, our brains have been re-wired, but the guff the papers talk about the internet rotting our brains - which, when analysed, is often just someone's opinion without any evidence - is absurd when compared to the tripe they serve up as news!

Couldn't help but think of Paul Kelly and how he is rolled out to to analyse, explain and propogate the middle aged white mans view. He's become one of the shrillest to survive but can't see it. More insight in your work than I've seen in the Australian for years. Watch out, they'll be after you next.
