APN boru-ha-ha widens. On Friday, Crikey revealed the anger on the Sunshine Coast among small business advertisers over local rag the Sunshine Coast Daily’s relentless plugging of online shopping portal brandsExclusive, which parent company APN News & Media bought for $36 million in July. Regular SCD advertisers say their hard-earned has effectively been spent buying a competitor hell bent on putting them out of business.
To rub salt into the wound, the full-page colour ads contain zero disclosure that brandsExclusive is an APN subsidiary. Now, word has reached us that the ads are appearing not just in the flagship SCD, but across APN’s whole Queensland stable, including papers in Mackay, Hervey Bay, Rockhampton and Toowoomba. Advertisers in those towns can’t be happy either.
Sounds like APN’s new regional “adviser”, former Fairfax CEO Brian McCarthy, could do worse than extend an olive branch to quell the outrage. — Andrew Crook
