Julia Gillard is a politician with “dead intent”, says Crikey Canberra correspondent Bernard Keane; “an almost perfect embodiment of her party, particularly in its current form”. Whereas Tony Abbott is the accidental political leader: he upset Joe Hockey in a leadership ballot as a stop-gap, a man considered divisive on religious and gender grounds who even his own party believed didn’t have what it takes to lead the country. How times change.
